Conditions of prayer
Conditions of salah are prerequisites that must exist before prayer is valid — such as being Muslim, mature, ritually pure, and aware of the time.
Conditions of salah (shuroot) are external prerequisites that make prayer obligatory and allow it to be performed validly. Common Shafi'i examples:
- Being Muslim and of sound mind
- Puberty — obligatory prayer begins at maturity
- Ritual purity from minor and major impurity (wudu' or tayammum if needed)
- Modest covering of awrah
- Entering the correct prayer time
- Facing the qibla (except in special cases)
- Intention in the heart at the start of prayer
Conditions vary slightly by situation (travel, illness, etc.). Confirm with i-Fiqh or a local scholar.
