History & background

The National Mosque opened on 27 August 1965 by Malaysia's first Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman. It replaced Jamek as the capital's principal mosque after independence, symbolising Islam's role in the new nation's identity.

Its inverted umbrella dome represents modern Malaysia's aspirations — sheltering citizens while remaining open. The 73 m minaret and vast open ablution pool make it one of Southeast Asia's most recognisable contemporary Islamic landmarks.

Located near Kuala Lumpur station and the National Museum in zone WLY01. Worshippers from KL Sentral, Lake Gardens, Chow Kit, and Brickfields all follow the same timetable.

Architect: Federal Government Architects Division (1965)
