History & background

Penang State Mosque opened in 1980 in Butterworth — Seberang Perai, as Penang's official state mosque. Though George Town is better known, the state mosque was placed in Butterworth to serve the large Muslim population in Seberang Perai.

Modern Islamic design with capacity around 5,000 makes it the main Friday prayer centre for Seberang Perai. It's near Penang Sentral — the main transport hub to Penang Island.

Butterworth uses zone PNG01. Penang has four zones (PNG01–PNG04) — George Town may use a different zone (PNG02).
