Islamic calendar and Hijrah

The Hijri calendar is 354/355 days — 12 lunar months; key dates are set by hilal sighting in Malaysia.

The Hijri calendar begins from the Prophet's migration to Medina. Each month starts with the new crescent (hilal) — roughly 29 or 30 days.

12 months: Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-awwal, Rabi al-thani, Jumada al-awwal, Jumada al-thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qa'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah.

In Malaysia, official dates for 1 Ramadan, 1 Shawwal, and 1 Muharram are set by hilal sighting by religious authorities — not the Gregorian calendar alone. See our calendar page for key dates and the date converter.
