Disliked prayer times
In Malaysian Shafi’i practice, avoid unrestricted sunnah after Fajr until sunrise, and after Asr until Maghrib. Use your JAKIM columns. Not a fatwa.
When are the disliked prayer times on a JAKIM timetable?
In Malaysian Shafi’i practice, avoid unrestricted sunnah after Fajr until sunrise, and after Asr until Maghrib. Use your JAKIM columns. Not a fatwa.
How do I read disliked times on a JAKIM timetable?
JAKIM does not print “makruh” on the timetable. What you have are time columns. In the Shafi’i summary taught in Malaysia, two fences are mentioned most often: after Fajr prayer until sunrise, and after Asr prayer until Maghrib. For that, use your zone’s Fajr, Syuruk, Asr, and Maghrib columns — do not guess minutes.
Fiqh also mentions the time when the sun is at zenith (just before Dhuhr). e-Solat has no separate “istiwa” column. Do not invent a clock; if unsure, ask an imam.
Does this mean obligatory prayer is forbidden?
No. The Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha columns are when obligatory prayers enter. The disliked-time discussion is usually about unrestricted voluntary prayers in those windows. Make-up prayers and some prayers with a cause have their own rulings — that is not a timetable page’s job.
Why not use Google for this?
Google may shift Fajr or Maghrib. A fence built from the wrong clock is the wrong fence. In Malaysia it is safer to follow e-Solat for your zone. See Google vs JAKIM and sunrise and Dhuha.
| JAKIM column | Use it as |
|---|---|
| Fajr | Dawn enters; after Fajr, avoid unrestricted sunnah until sunrise |
| Syuruk | Sunrise — Fajr ends |
| Dhuhr | Dhuhr enters (after zawal) |
| Asr | Asr enters; after Asr, avoid unrestricted sunnah until Maghrib |
| Maghrib | Sunset — the Asr fence ends; breaking fast |
If you are unsure, ask your mosque imam. We do not invent fatwas.
